November 17, 1969

National Headlines:

• The Apollo 12 spacecraft is on schedule for a lunar landing later this week.  Today it entered into the moon’s gravity and will orbit the moon tonight.  Astronauts Charles Conrad and Alan Bean will attempt to land “The Intrepid”, a four-legged space module, in a 400-foot wide circle on the Moon’s Ocean of Storms.  Once landed, the pair will exit the module to plant test equipment on the moon’s surface.

State Headlines:

• Statistics indicate that 60% of the state’s farm families earn a portion of their incomes from sources off the family farm.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Northwestern Bell Telephone Company is moving back into its remodeled facility at 15 4th Avenue SW after working in temporary quarters throughout the city since last spring when the project started.

• Two area Snow Queens have been selected and will participate in the state contest in Aberdeen in January.  They are Denise Hill, Britton and Mary Ellen Snaza, Roslyn.

• The Northern State College football Wolves under coach Jim Kretchman completed a second consecutive undefeated season.  Ron Kaaz, Dave Pastian, Kerry Johnston, Greg Gabler, Rich Andrejewski, and Lee Wilson are members of the team.

• Sheryl Adolphson, Karen Hicks, Diane Parkhurst, Deborah Spaulding, Sandra Goehring, and Joan Poe are some of the contestants in the Miss Aberdeen Contest to be held this weekend.  The Aberdeen Lions Club is sponsoring the event.

• Eat at Ella’s Café at 114 S Lincoln in Aberdeen.  It’s open 5a.m. – 8p.m. and features the best in home cooked meals.

• Toy specials at White Drug include Talking Buffy and Mrs. Beasley dolls $6.95, Major Matt Mason astronaut action figure $1.49, Hot Wheels stock cars $.57 each, and Barrel of Monkeys $1.88

• Walgreen’s Holiday Wonderland is now open and featured specials this week include a 6’ Canadian pine artificial tree with stand $9.97, a Kodak “electric eye” instamatic camera $29.97, Etch-A-Sketch $2.33 and a 2 pound fruit cake $.88!!

National Headlines:

• A new survey of American families indicates that 9 out of 10 families give kids an allowance and the average amount of that allowance is $3.34 per week.  The average 5 year old starts at $1.40 and the average 16 year old gets $8.13

State Headlines:

• Company officials are looking at the Sioux Falls John Morrell plant after it recorded losses during the first nine months of this year.  If the plant closes, 2500 workers would be out of a job-Sioux Falls Morrell is the largest private employer in the state.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Work on the Wylie Park Castle is 99% complete according to city officials.  The castle will open next spring.

• Northern State football coach Dennis Miller was named Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches in the Northern Intercollegiate Conference.

• The Groton girls’ basketball team defeated Roncalli to claim the 1A conference title.

• Voters in the Groton School District will hold a vote in January to determine whether or not to close the Columbia school permanently.  Currently the school has 34 students in grades K-3.

• Ashes are still smoldering in Redfield where a fire destroyed Crawford Furniture, the American Family Insurance office, the Spink County Senior Center and KQKD Radio station, all in the 600 block of Redfield’s Main Street.

• Kristi Geisler will represent Aberdeen in the upcoming Snow Queen contest.

• John Ruckdashel and Chad Igl will be featured soloists at the Simmons Junior High music department concert tonight.

• Tickets are still available for the United States “Junior A” Hockey League Exhibition Game at the Holum Expo center tomorrow night.  The game features the Rochester Mustangs and the Sioux City Musketeers.

• Billy Beck is the Roscoe High School DAR good citizenship winner for the 1986-1987 school year.

• The annual magazine sale fundraiser at Roncalli High School set a record with sales totaling more than $26,700.  Top salesman was Tom Scheid.

National Headlines:

• The average price of a one-pound loaf of white bread is $.29—up a nickel from one year ago.  An increase in wheat prices accounts for 4 cents of the increase.

• The Nixon administration is considering a ban on Sunday driving as part of its overall plan to help Americans conserve fuel.

State Headlines:

• The South Dakota Bicentennial Commission approved a request from the state’s Rural Electric Association to place an American flag on every farm in the state.

Local/Area Headlines:

• This is a busy week for local Snow Queen contests—14 of the 50 local contests are scheduled during this week.

• The drive-up windows are nearly complete at the Aberdeen National Bank.  A temporary drive-up is located in the bank’s north parking lot.

• The Thanksgiving Day Menu at the Ward Hotel Motor Inn in Aberdeen has been announced.  Diners can choose from the following entrees priced at $3.00 each, roast turkey with dressing, prime rib, batter dipped walleye, or baked Virginia ham with orange sauce.  Each comes with all the trimmings including pumpkin pie.

• Tomorrow marks the grand opening of the DeForrest Starlite Café at the junction of Highways 12 and 281.  There will be free coffee all day.

• The Leola Pirates ended their season undefeated and are ranked the number 1 11-man small school football team.  Some team members are Lyle Schumack, Toby Roth, Dan Schooley, Bruce Schumacher, and David Taylor.

• Dr. John Berggren will conduct the College/Civic Symphony and choirs in two performances of The Messiah on December 2.  Free tickets are available by contacting the music office at Northern.

• The 38th annual “Shorty’s Night” will be tomorrow night in Cresbard at the Legion Hall.

• Everyone is being asked to set their home heating thermostats no higher than 68 degrees during the daytime this winter to help conserve energy.

National Headlines:

• Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones are scheduled to appear at the Target Center in Minneapolis as part of their national tour.  Tickets for the Minneapolis concert will be as much as $151.25—a record for that city.  The band will also appear at the Fargo Dome and ticket prices there range from $40 to $125.50!

State Headlines:

• The band from Brandon Valley High School will march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City this year.    The students will line up at 3am on Thanksgiving Day for a parade run through.  They will then have breakfast and be back in formation at 7:45 for the 9am parade.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The state B girls’ basketball tournament is being played in Aberdeen at the Wachs Arena on the campus of Northern State University.  Teams in the tournament are Frederick-Hecla, Willow Lake, Mount Vernon, Baltic, Selby Area, Tulare, Timber Lake, and Burke.  Baltic took the title defeating Willow Lake in the championship game 53-41.

• Jeff Fisher rolled a perfect 300 in the Michelob Classic League play yesterday.  It is Fisher’s 7th perfect score of his bowling career.

• The congregation of Bethlehem Lutheran Church will move into its new building this weekend.  Farewell services will be held at the old church and a caravan will travel to the new church for a service of celebration and noon meal.

• Ten of the eleven residents of Wetonka were filmed for the David Letterman Show.  Each read one of 10 reasons why living in a small town is good.

• A new fast-food Chinese restaurant is now open in the Lafayette Mall—The Egg Roll King is open 11am – 10pm daily.

• Tonight is the Snow Queen contest at Presentation College.  The winner will participate in the state contest in January.

• An Autumn Swing Dance will be held at the Ward Hotel Ballroom tomorrow night.  Dance to the music of Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddies and other swing bands.  John Kersten and his partner Linda Van DeRostyne will be giving swing dance lessons.

National Headlines:

• First Lady Barbara Bush gave Hillary Clinton a tour of the White House.  The Clintons will move into the mansion in January after the inauguration of Bill Clinton as President.

• There is a resurgence in the popularity of Troll Dolls.  They are a hot Christmas gift item for kids again this year.

State Headlines:

• Permits are now available that will allow people to cut their own Christmas trees in the Black Hills.  The price of a permit is $5.00.  Permits must be attached to all trees being transported out of the Hills.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Carrie Simon is the senior Snow Queen from Bowdle and Tara Hoffman is the town’s Junior Snow Queen.

• The Roscoe/Hosmer area senior Snow Queen is Tracey Beyers.  Her sister Heather was crowned the Junior Snow Queen.

• The Sully County Library has issued a plea for all patrons with overdue books to please return them—no questions asked.  The shelves are looking quite bare right now and the books are needed back at the library.

• The Gettysburg School will hold “Switch Day” tomorrow—the switch is parents attend school, kids stay home!

• The Cub Scouts from Selby/Java troops collected 863 food items for the Scouting for Food project.

• There is a gas war going on in Aberdeen.  Today’s price for a gallon of unleaded fuel is $.97.  Some station owners expect to see the price drop as low as $.89 before the decline stops.

• 10-year old Chris Knight from Aberdeen won the State Punt, Pass and Kick title in his age bracket at the Dakota Dome last weekend.

• The Aberdeen Cribbage League will have an organizational meeting tonight at the VFW.
