January 7, 1964

National Headlines:

  • Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater launched his bid to be the Republican presidential candidate at an event in New Hampshire today.  Goldwater thinks he already has 500 of the necessary 655 delegate votes to capture the nomination at the party’s convention to be held in San Francisco in July.

State Headlines:

  • SD Governor Archie Gubbrud delivered his “State of the State” address today in Pierre.  He stated that SD “is not in any immediate financial difficulty” so he recommended no new taxes be implemented this year and existing taxes be held at their current level.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • NBC TV commentator, Martin Agronsky, who covered the Kennedy Assassination in Dallas, will be the featured speaker at the annual Chamber Banquet to be held in the Civic Arena next week.

  • Northern State Teacher’s College has announced that its 1964 “traveling classroom” will be a field trip to Nova Scotia and the New York World’s Fair.  The trip will be from July 16 - August 10 and will be led by Dr. Lloyd Johnson of Northern.

  • The Aberdeen City Commission has set a new fee for residential garbage collection at $2.00 per month.  Prior to this, there was no fee for garbage collection.

  • Presentation Junior College is hosting a six-week lecture series about Communism. 

  • The SD Young Democrats have presented the Alexander Mitchell Library with recordings the Air Force, Marine, Army and Navy bands made last spring to benefit the National Cultural Center in Washington DC.

  • Dennis Maloney, Brown County States Attorney, will speak to the St. Mary’s Home and School Association about the problems of juvenile delinquency in Aberdeen.

  • Sears, Aberdeen’s most complete department store, is having its biggest sale of the season starting at 8:45AM sharp tomorrow.  Some featured sale items include:  A Kenmore dryer $87 (matching washer only $157); a Silvertone Consolette 23” TV in a slim cabinet with “up front” tuning $155; boys & girls saddle shoes $2.25; and an 8’ toboggan $19.99

  • Registration for Nite School at the Aberdeen School of Commerce will be held next week.  Classes will be held Monday and Thursday evenings at the school 314 1/2 S Lincoln.

  • Enjoy the finest ribs, steaks, and seafood at “Surfwood” supper and dance club on west Highway 12 Aberdeen.  Never a cover charge!

January 8, 1974

National Headlines:

  • Jury selection began in St. Paul today for the trial of American Indian Movement leaders Russell Means and Dennis Banks.  Both are charged with 10 counts of conspiracy in connection with a 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, South Dakota.

  • The Buffalo Bill’s star O.J. Simpson has been selected to play in the upcoming Pro Bowl.  Simpson was a unanimous choice of the Associated Press sports writers for this honor after rushing for a record-setting 2003 yards this season.

State Headlines:

  • The national weather service stated today that temperatures statewide have been 20-25 degrees colder than normal for the past week.  Flandreau reported a temp of minus 40 on January 1--that is considerably warmer than the state’s all time record cold temp recorded on February 17, 1938 in Macintosh---   58 below zero (without wind chill)! 

Local/Area Headlines:

  • In preparation of passage of the “Metric Conversion Act” by the US Congress that calls for the US to change its system of weights and measurements to the Metric System, Northern is presenting two classes on the Metric System as part of its extension service.  Terry Richardson will teach the class in Gettysburg this spring.  The second class will be held in Watertown.

  • Roncalli’s Cary Hornaman leads the Northeastern Conference scoring battle with 148 after six conference games this season.  He is averaging 24.7 points per game.

  • Those representing Brown County is this year’s state legislature are:  E.C. Pieplow and Allen Sperry in the Senate and Joe Barnett, Richard Kolker, Bud Wood and Bernie Kopecky in the House.

  • The Salvation Army raised $5,424.43 in its annual Christmas appeal.  Nine service clubs and many individuals served as volunteer “bell-ringers” this year.

  • The First National Bank is offering 5 1/2% on a 3 month CD and 7 1/4% on a 4 year CD.

  • Terry Kline is the salesman of the month at Loel Lust Chevrolet

  • See Warren Oates as “Dillinger” at the Orpheum and a return engagement of “MASH” at the Capitol.

January 9, 1989

National Headlines:

  • Baseball hall of famer, Bill Terry, died today at age 90.  Terry was the last living National League player to bat .400, an accomplishment he attained in 1930 while playing for the New York Giants (moved to San Francisco eventually).  Terry had a lifetime batting average of .341 and a total of 1041 RBIs in his 14-year pro career.  He was a player-manager for the Giants from 1932 to 1941. 

State Headlines:

  • The Board of Regents has received more than 50 applications for the position of president of the University of South Dakota.

  • The state of rural healthcare in South Dakota is bleak according to Senator Tom Daschle.  More than 40 family physician positions are unfilled, 225 RN positions are empty, and 16 SD counties have no hospital facilities.

Local/Area Headlines

  • An open house for newly crowned SD Snow Queen, Rena Bloomster, will be held today at the Ipswich High School gym.  Rena represented Ispwich at the recent contest.  Jim Lust was this year’s Frosty, the mystery snowman.

  • Mayor Tim Rich signed a proclamation declaring January 9 - 13 “Spirit Week” for the SADD chapter at Central High School.  Events such as “Mismatched Shoe Day”, “Nerd Day” and “Sunglasses Day” will take place throughout the week and culminate in a dance following the basketball game between the Eagles and the Roncalli Cavaliers on Saturday night.

  • Troy McQuillen of Los Angeles was a runner-up in the contest to design an official flag for the city of Aberdeen.  Jason Keeton, a junior at Central High School, created the winning design in the contest sponsored by the Exchange Club.  The contest attracted over 300 entries.

  • Brown County’s delegation to the SD legislature this year includes:  Senators Bill Taylor and Lars Herseth and Representatives Craig Schaunaman, Steve Cutler, and Al Waltman.

  • J.Clifton Hurlbert is the newly installed Potentate of the Yelduz Shrine in Aberdeen.

  • Dr. Mark Bledsoe will be teaching a 2-part class on “Care of the Spine and Back” at the AARC.

  • Tonight on TV:  “MacGyver”, “Kate & Allie” and “Almost Grown”

 

January 10, 1958

National Headlines:

  • President Dwight Eisenhower sent his 1958 budget to Congress today.  He’s requesting nearly 74 Billion Dollars.  This is the largest federal budget since World War II.  Harry Truman actually had a bigger budget in 1953--the costliest year of the Korean War--but his budget included highway spending, Eisenhower’s does not.

  • The Associated Press has named Ted Williams the 1957 male athlete of the year.

State Headlines:

  • “Look” Magazine has chosen Yankton as one of four All-American Midwestern Cities for 1958.  The others are: Galesburg, Illinois; Middletown, Ohio, and Omaha, Nebraska.

  • The state is enjoying mild weather despite its being January.  Lemmon reported 46 degrees yesterday while Pickstown reported temps of 57.  Sioux Falls and Huron topped out at 56.  Aberdeen reached 52--it was only 54 in Miami!!

Local/Area Headlines:

  • The offices in Aberdeen’s Municipal Building will be closed on Saturdays from now on to conform to the new 5-day workweek adopted recently by the city commission.

  • There will be a “record” dance at the YMCA Friday evening following the Palamar party.  Attendees should bring records that are clearly marked with their name.  Dress for this dance will be like any school dance--no Levi’s or jeans allowed.

  • Central High School’s newly organized Letterman’s Club, the “Golden A Club” has chosen a blue V-neck sweater as their official letter sweater.  The sweaters will be adorned with a gold “A” trimmed in blue, but the size of the letter has not been decided.

  • The local game warden advised ice fisherman that an ice shack is not legal until it bears the name and address of its owner.  He also reminded them that the law requires the door of a fish shack to be open at all times while occupied so rangers can easily check the fishermen and their catch.

  • Robert Webb and Duane Thurow are members of the Aberdeen Central speech team that traveled to Brookings for the SDSU Invitational Speech Meet.

  • Give Mom a rest tonight and take her to dinner at Helen’s California Kitchen.

  • Plan to attend the dance this Saturday evening at the Richmond Pavilion.  The “Hub City Four” will provide music.

  • See Tony Curtis in “Beachhead” showing nightly at The World Theater

January 11, 1984

National Headlines:

  • Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album received 12 Grammy nominations

  • Harmon Killebrew, Luis Aparicio, and Don Drysdale were elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. 

State Headlines:

  • Governor Bill Janklow has asked the SD legislature to approve his plan to close the University of South Dakota at Springfield and turn the campus into a minimum-security prison.

  • Weather experts at SDSU are unable to explain the wild fluctuations in SD’s weather during 1983.  January & February were among the warmest on record but December had a two-week stretch of record setting cold.  August was abnormally hot and November was the wettest on record--all in all, a very odd weather year in the state.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • The Aberdeen public school board has approved a new policy that will allow ninth graders at the city’s two junior high schools to participate in high school activities.

  • Frontier Airlines has announced it will begin making two round trips daily between Aberdeen and Denver.  Airport officials are unsure what facilities the airline plans to use at the local terminal, as no extra space is available right now.

  • There will be a 5-week adult education course offered at the Frederick High School dealing with the use of microcomputers.  Individual sessions will address:  how to purchase a computer; computer software for electronic bookkeeping, word processing and computerized grade keeping, how to care for a disk drive, various uses for a computer, and finally, some hands-on experience. 

  • Tickets for the SD Class A basketball tournament are now available at both Aberdeen high schools—in the principal’s office.  Prices are $24 adults and $12 for a student ticket.  Money MUST accompany all purchases.

  • In basketball, the Ipswich Tigers’ winning streak was broken by the Groton Tigers who defeated them 74-60.  Groton’s high scorer was John James who had 22; Jeff Omland and Brad Gauer led Ipswich with 16 points apiece.

  • Langford defeated Leola 55-44 despite 12 points from Leola’s Rob Waltman.

  • Aberdeen’s Boys and Girls Club is sponsoring a Bingo Night dinner at Theo’s in the Ward Hotel.  Sirloin steak with all the trimmings for only $2.25

  • At the movies”  “Christine” a 58 Plymouth Fury with a taste for blood, and “Two of a Kind” with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John are at Midco Theatres.

  • On TV tonight:  “The Fall Guy”  “Night Court”  “St. Elsewhere”
