National Headlines:

• National news reporter Jessica Savitch will leave NBC when her contract expires this summer.  The network has hired Connie Chung to replace Savitch.  Savitch hopes to be picked up by one of the other major networks.

• Chrysler Corporation CEO Lee Iococca announced the company would pay off $400 million, or one-third of its debt to the federal government in June.  The government loaned Chrysler $1.2 billion in 1981 & 1982 to keep the company out of bankruptcy.

State Headlines:

• Tickets are now on sale for the grandstand shows at the 1983 state fair.  Headliners include:  The Oak Ridge Boys with opening act Williams and Ree, The Charlie Daniels Band, Mel Tillis and Silvia, and The Wayne Newton Show.  Tickets for the individual shows are $10.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Aberdeen’s First National Bank is now part of the Norwest Bank Corporation, which includes 86 banks in the upper Midwest area.

• Sign up now for summer classes in COBOL computer language at Presentation College.  Ken Dohn is the instructor.

• Pizza Unlimited is now open at 602 S Lawson in Aberdeen.  They offer, “a new concept in pizza--we make them--you bake them.”

• The Jordan Millwork Company in Aberdeen will close tomorrow after serving the city for 10 years.  It took over the old Dakota Sash and Door Company.

• See Honest John’s Sports Center for a new 16’ Sylvan Seamaster fishing boat complete with 50-horse motor and trailer just $5768.

• Plan to attend the Mother’s Day Tea in Columbia this Saturday.  Bob Wall of Murdo will provide special entertainment.  Tickets are $3.

• The Aberdeen Hockey Association will run the summer concession stands at the north baseball complex and the Moccasin Creek complex.

• The Super City Mall merchants are sponsoring a “Phone Your Mother Free for Mother’s Day” event at the mall.  Call anywhere in the US except Hawaii and Alaska and talk free for 5 minutes. There will be 2 phones available--1 for in state calls and 1 for out of state calls.

National Headlines:

• Proud Clarion won the 93rd annual Kentucky Derby today recording the 3rd fastest time in the history of the race at 2:00.3.5, which netted his owners $162,200.

• The Minnesota Vikings signed Notre Dame’s standout defensive lineman, Alan Page, for an undisclosed amount in the first round of the NFL draft. 

State Headlines:

• The Social Security Administration informed SD Senator Karl Mundt that during 1966 nearly 92,000 South Dakota’s collected Social Security benefits totaling more than $6 million per month.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Now open at 1201 S Main “Campus Variety Store”, the little store with everything, serving the Northern State neighborhood seven days a week.

• Myron Floren will be the featured entertainment at the Day County Fair this year.

• The addition of the third floor to the Mewaldt-Jensen classroom building at Northern is progressing well and is expected to be ready for use next fall.

• Northern’s Quent Alwin tied the state record in the mile run at the Dakota Relays with a time of 4:13.5 but finished second to a runner from Colorado State.

• Pierpont’s Silver Saddle Club is sponsoring the “Little Cowboys Rodeo” at the Pierpont Lake Arena this weekend.  The event is for “little cowboys and cowgirls” under the age of 15.

National Headlines:

• Killer tornados ripped through Omaha NE today destroying at least 500 homes and severely damaging another 1000.  Three persons lost their lives in the storms and over 100 people suffered injuries.  Damages are estimated in the millions of dollars.

• The average supermarket customer spends $8.23 on each trip to the store.

State Headlines:

• South Dakota Governor Richard Kneip and his top level aides are in Rapid City where they are holding a planning retreat to chart the course of state government for the next four years.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Join the “I’m Here Again Club” at the Circle Pines Motel in Groton to receive special discounted rates.

• The Aberdeen Fire Fighters will be participating in the national Fire Services Recognition Day on Saturday.  The fire stations will be open for public tours and the fire fighters auxiliary will be serving coffee and donuts throughout the day.

• A stray blue parakeet caught in the south part of town is being held at the Aberdeen Police Department.  The owner may pick up the “Jailbird” at the earliest convenience.

• Courtney’s Books and Things in downtown Aberdeen has a large selection of Eaton’s fine stationery, which makes a great graduation gift.

• The Java Jubilee Committee is extending an invitation to all surrounding communities to participate in the jubilee festivities June 12 - 14.  They are looking specifically for parade entries.

• Northern State’s women’s softball team is headed to Omaha to play in the national tournament.  Team members include Lonna Wanner, Sue Gapp, Paulette DeWald and Kathy Graves.  Diane Evans is the coach.

• Mother’s Day special at the Farmer’s Bar in Brentford--10 oz Lobster, baked potato, salad and coffee just $5.50.

• Rainy weather has forced the cancellation of the Eureka Relays and the postponement of the Hoven Relays.

• Aberdeen Mayor Jeff Solem will deliver the commencement address at Polo High School Friday evening.  Thirteen students will receive diplomas this year.

• The music department at Northwestern High School will present its pops concert tomorrow evening. Bob Kiesz is the musical director for the event.

May 8, 1970

National Headlines:

• College students on campuses throughout the country are protesting the expanded war efforts in South East Asia and the shooting of four students at Kent State University.  Thousands more traveled to Washington DC to march for peace in front of the White House.

• SD Senator George McGovern and Maine’s Senator Edmund Muskie have each put together preliminary committees to explore the possibility of making a run to become the Democratic presidential candidate in the 1972 election.

State Headlines:

• South Dakota colleges participating in the federal workstudy program will receive nearly $660,000 to subsidize the employment of over 2000 college students as part of their financial aid packages.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The Virginia Cafe in Aberdeen is now serving smelt dinners.

• Many students at Northern boycotted classes to protest the Vietnam War and the Kent State shootings.

• Two of the state’s premier mile runners will meet at the Groton Relays this weekend.  Bristol’s Loren Kambestad and Groton’s Terry Gilchrist will battle for the title. 

• Workmen have started preparing the ground at the site of Aberdeen’s new junior high school—Holgate-- on North Dakota Street near Fairgrounds Road.

• Peggy Taylor is the valedictorian of the senior class at Conde High School.  Dr. Dwayne Knight of Aberdeen will be the graduation speaker.

• High School bands from Cresbard and Britton are among 18 of the state’s bands invited to perform at the State Fair this fall.

• Bath residents will vote on May 28 to determine the fate of the town’s schoolhouse now that Bath is part of the Aberdeen school district.

• Mr. & Mrs. Fred Hatterscheidt hosted a luncheon at Northern for the Hatterscheidt Scholarship recipients attending the school including Bill Edwards of Aberdeen, Rochelle Anderson and Karen Jacobson of Bristol, Mary Gillick of Ipswich and Edith DeMarce of Frederick.

• Eureka’s 880-yard relay team is ready for the Aberdeen Relays this weekend after winning at the conference meet in Groton last week.  Team members are Gary Krein, Steve Bertsch, Carey Lapp and Vaughn Kary.

• Get your tickets now for the NSC’s Big Entertainment Committee’s “Spring Entertainment Festival” at the Aberdeen Baseball Park.  Bands scheduled to appear are:  Crow to perform their hit “Evil Woman”, The Original Caste with their hit “One Tin Soldier”, and Chad Mitchell with hits “Both Sides Now” and “Let’s Get Together.”    Advance tickets $2; at the door $3

National Headlines:

• Two balloonists attempting to cross the United States in a helium balloon are traveling in a South Dakota made product.  Their $20,000 balloon named “Kitty Hawk” was manufactured at Raven Industries in Sioux Falls and is scheduled to drift across the state this weekend, weather permitting.  The Kitty Hawk measures 200,000 square feet and is made of polyethylene.

State Headlines:

• South Dakota’s top entomologist stated that the grasshopper hatch is about two weeks early in the state and has already started in western South Dakota.  It is expected that nearly 3 million acres in the state will be severely damaged by grasshoppers this summer.

Local/Area Headlines:

• 282 students will receive diplomas at Northern’s graduation ceremony tomorrow in the Aberdeen Civic Arena.  Ben Reifel, former US Congressman from South Dakota, will deliver the commencement address.

• A reciprocal agreement has been reached between Lee Park Golf Course and Moccasin Creek Golf Course to allow members of each club to golf on the other course when their home course is closed for tournament play.

• American News sportswriter Larry Desautels, Northern basketball coach Bob Wachs and Northern athletic director Clark Swisher were among the 13 charter members inducted into the South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference Hall of Fame today.

• Country star Jeannie C. Riley and the Buddy Young Show will present two performances in Redfield in June as part of the community’s 100th anniversary celebration.  Tickets are now available and are $7 each.

• Mark Milbrandt has joined the Brown County sheriff’s department as a deputy.  He has been working in that department as a jailer since last year.

• The Masquers Club at Northern named Jim Walker of Aberdeen Best Actor in a major production for his role as Sakini in “Teahouse of the August Moon.” The Best Actress Award was presented to Sonia Niles of Ipswich for her portrayal of Millie in “California Suite.”

• Margot Gillette is one of the dancers in the upcoming Johnny Cavelle Dance Recital.

• Sister Pam Donelan has been chosen to direct ACT II’s production of “Annie Get Your Gun” scheduled to open on June 26 at the Johnson Fine Arts Center.  ACT II was organized six months ago and includes actors from local schools and the community interested in providing Aberdeen with amateur theater productions.

• Held over for a 6th big week at the Capitol Theater -- “A Coal Miner’s Daughter” starring Sissy Spacek.
