National Headlines:

• Yesterday the Dow plunged more than 500 points, and today it recovered 288 of those.  It is still 1,510 points below its July high.  This translates to a loss of $2 trillion (at least on paper) to investors in just six weeks time.

• Northwest Airlines laid off 177 workers today and said there could be many more lay offs if the pilot strike, now in its fourth day, is not settled soon.

State Headlines:

• Smoke from Canadian forest fires is drifting into the state today due to strong North winds. 

• Officials at the SD State Fair have been working hard to reverse the decline in fair attendance in recent years.  Last year’s visitor numbers were the lowest since 1984.

• A good lineup of grandstand entertainment including Clint Black, REO Speedwagon, Loretta Lynn, and the Steve Miller Band is expected to help.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Members of the Hamlin Garland Society will re-dedicate the author’s memorial boulder near Ordway next week.

• Local video shops are swamped today with the release of “Titanic”.  K-Mart reported that only 70 of several hundred copies of the movies remained at the store by late this afternoon.

• Nadya Wiedrich, a senior at NSU, has been named the NCAA Woman of the Year in South Dakota.  She is a member of the NSU track team.

• Warner has a new girls basketball coach this season—Chuck Welke Sr.  Warner students will move into their new school after Thanksgiving this year.

• Dave Rave, director of the Alexander Mitchell Library, announced today he will retire in December.

• Learn about the Internet in special classes dealing with browsing, searching, and e-mailing.  Cost is only $30.

• Construction crews are busy on the new Office Max building in Aberdeen.  A November 1 completion date is expected.

• Rivals Roncalli and Groton will take to the football field this weekend and Groton hopes to end its long losing steak dating back to 1995.  (Groton did win 14-13)

National Headlines:

• US Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz has won two gold medals so far in the Munich Olympics.  He is scheduled to swim again today despite a strained back.

• Presidential candidates George McGovern and Richard Nixon are planning to begin their campaigns in earnest after the Labor Day holiday this weekend.

State Headlines:

• Officials in the State Tourism office are urging travelers to get off the interstate and enjoy the beauty of our state, which calls itself “The Land of Infinite Variety” saying once you’ve seen one concrete interstate clover leaf, you’ve seen them all.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Carl Anderson is the 1972 United Way Campaign chairman with Harley Hoffman as his assistant.

• The organized effort in Aberdeen to assist victims of the Rapid City flood has come to an end according to chairman E.C. Pieplow.  The group sent over $19,600 to Rapid City since its inception in June.

• Precision Industries will begin operations in Aberdeen on September 11.  The company will be located on Highway 12 east of Aberdeen and will specialize in the welding of aluminum.

• Back to school specials at Jupiter in Aberdeen:  4-speed, portable record player $11.00, a 10 pack of Moon Pies $.28, Webster’s Dictionary $.88, assignment notebook $.16

• Tuition at Roncalli High School has been set at $120.00 for the 1st student, $80.00 for a family’s 2nd student and $40.00 for the 3rd student.  Student fees average $45

• Polo High School is starting a football program on a limited basis this fall.  The school is seeking help in outfitting the program from schools with surplus equipment.

• A brand new scoreboard was used at Simmons Field for the first time last night.  The Central Booster Club purchased the $2000 scoreboard and donated it to the school.

• The Hogg Restaurant Service is planning a new 22,500 square foot warehouse addition with over 23,000 cubic feet of freezer storage.  The company will move its warehouse operation from its present Railroad Avenue location when the structure is finished.

• At the Movies:  In Hosmer—“Hospital” starring George C. Scott and Diana Rigg, “Fiddler on the Roof” at the Orpheum, “Play it Again, Sam” with Woody Allen at the Capitol.

National Headlines:

• The Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon raised a record $34 million this year.

• Semi-final match ups in U.S. Open Tennis competition are Chris Evert-Lloyd against Helena Markova and Martina Navratalova against Stephi Graff.

State Headlines:

• Proponents of a mandatory seat belt law will be working to get such a law passed by the 1987 SD Legislature.

• Visitor services at Mt. Rushmore will end September 13.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The 1986 United Way Campaign will kick off tomorrow with an 18 mile torch run through Aberdeen.  This year’s goal is $425,000.

• Presentation College president, Sister Lynn Marie Welbig, is on a one year sabbatical.  Sister Mary Francis Dunn will assume those responsibilities for the upcoming school year.

• Houghton is planning a “Herseth (Lars) for Governor Day” this weekend.  One of the activities planned is a softball game between Democrats for Herseth and Republicans for Herseth.

• Neal Trebilcock of Aberdeen Central won the boys cross country quadrangular at Brookings today.

• Third year law student Shelly Weick from Aberdeen represented the USD law school at the National American Bar Association meeting in New York.

• Arby’s in Aberdeen is celebrating its 1st anniversary by offering its regular roast beef sandwiches for only $.99 each.

• The 2nd annual Columbia “Moonlight Madness” 5x5 marathon softball tournament will be held at Columbia Park this weekend.  The roster is limited to 12 teams so register today.

• The 16” slow pitch team from The Last Chance won the national tournament last year, but finished 4th in this year’s event last weekend.

• At the Movies:  “About Last Night” at the Capitol “Top Gun” and “Aliens” at the Cinema Twins.

National Headlines:

• School officials are wondering how to cope with the new mini-skirt fashion as it relates to school dress codes.  Last year the skirts were banned in most places, this year the skirts are so prevalent that officials realize they must make some type of policy about them.  One school will send girls home if their skirt is more than one inch above their knees.

• Today’s cars average 14.5 miles per gallon of gas.

State Headlines:

• Attendance at the state fair hit a record this year with 248,489 people going through the gates.  Receipts are nearly $250,000.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Joe Morello, the world’s greatest drummer, and Bobby Christian, the world’s best percussionist, will offer a percussion clinic at Simmons Junior High next week.

• Attorney Dennis Brown has joined the practice of Elmer Thurow and Duane Thurow.  Their offices are in room 214 of the Western Union Building (now Dacotah Prairie Museum)

• Voters in Veblen approved a $250,000 bond for a new elementary school.

• Aberdeen’s First National Bank is sponsoring a Student-Teacher Appreciation Day.  Stop in to register for these prizes—Central & Roncalli students-- $25.00 college savings account; Northern-Presentation students-- an entire school year movie pass for two at the Orpheum Theater.  Teachers should register for an expense paid roundtrip to the Vikings-49ers football game in Minneapolis.

• The Sacred Heart Altar Society will hold its annual hat sale in the Eagles Room at Kesslers.  There will be over 400 hats, some with matching purses, on sale.

• Top Records this week:  “Ode to Billie Jo” Bobbie Gentry, “All You Need is Love” the Beatles, “Light My Fire” the Doors, “Pleasant Valley Sunday” the Monkees.

• Over 180 people attended the “Fashion Fiesta ‘67” fashion show held at the Conde gym.  Proceeds will go to the Newman Center at Northern State College.

• Dinger-Graf Photography in Aberdeen has a newly built camera room featuring Hollywood lighting.  The lighting in their Britton and Ellendale studios has also been upgraded.
