• President Bill Clinton is the most traveled US president with visits to 58 countries.  By comparison George Herbert Walker Bush visited only 36 during his time as president.

• The majority of college students work during the school term.  A recent study indicated 65% of students in 2-year institutions and 52% of those in 4-year schools worked last year.

State Headlines:

• Former US Senator Larry Pressler and his wife Harriet are looking for a new home in Sioux Falls.  He spends about half is time in his home state now that he is no longer active in politics.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Homecoming candidates at Roncalli High School are Theresa DeWalt, Megan DesCamps, Amber Darling, Megan Hatzenbeller, Megan Pettit, Alex King, Brian Senger, Ryan Schwab, Joel Backous and Eric Sivertsen.   (Megan DesCamps and Alex King were crowned the next night)

National Headlines:

• President Jimmy Carter, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat are at Camp David for a Middle Eastern Summit Meeting in hopes of easing tensions in that region.

• Keith Moon, drummer with the rock group “The Who”, was found dead in his apartment yesterday.  He was 31.

State Headlines:

• Moving Governor Harvey Wollman into the governor’s mansion in Pierre cost SD taxpayers $10,000.  Wollman became Governor when Richard Kneip resigned the position to become the US Ambassador to Singapore.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The 23rd Annual Shrine Game will be played at Swisher Field today with the NSC Wolves taking on the University of Minnesota, Morris.  Admission is $2.50 for adults, $1.50 for students and $1.00 for kids.

• President Carter’s mother “Miss Lillian” will be in Aberdeen for an informal wine and cheese reception next week at Presentation College.  Admission is $10.00 per person.

• Jody McIntire, a sophomore at NSC, was crowned the SD Honey Queen and will compete in the national contest in San Diego next winter.

• NSC head football coach is offering “Understanding Football”.  The class requires little or no knowledge of the game and is designed to increase your enjoyment of the game.

• Randall Hopfinger CPA has joined the practice of Charles Clark and the firm name will now be Clark and Hopfinger Public Accountants.

• The Lefty’s Marine trapshooting team broke 224 of 250 targets in the club shootoff .  Team members are John Woodman, Don Wagner, Jerry Schley, and Ken Hallstrom.

• The SD Square and Round Dance Association held its summer shindig in Aberdeen with about 150 couples dancing at Dacotah Hall Gym on the campus of NSC.

State Headlines:

• Governor Bill Janklow and opponent Mike O’Connor of Sioux Falls met today in the first of a series of debates prior to the gubernatorial election in November.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Pamida is now open in the old Tempo area of the Super City Mall in Aberdeen.

• Take a tour of Aberdeen’s new downtown fire station and newly remodeled police department tomorrow.

• Next week is Emergency Medicine Week and St. Luke’s Hospital is hosting an open house in its emergency room that will include first aid demonstrations by hospital staff.

• The 1982 United Way campaign will kick off with a hot air balloon flight across Aberdeen.  Taking the ride with the balloon’s pilot will be United Way president Dr. Ken Geidt and KSDN announcer Gene Reich who will provide live, remote broadcasts from the balloon’s basket.

• The National Weather Service is predicting Aberdeen’s first killing frost (28 degrees) will occur October 1.

• Fifteen to 18 Aberdeen IRS employees have been placed on furlough by the federal government because it lacks the money to pay them.  Nationally 19,000 IRS employees have been furloughed.  All will be called back to work after September 30 when the government begins a new fiscal year.

• The Aberdeen Elks Lodge is hosting Elks Swim Team Fun Night tonight for the public to meet and celebrate with the Aberdeen Elks Swim Team who just won the state swim meet.

• In Hoven today the Band Mothers are sponsoring a bake sale to benefit the new uniform fund prior to the Hoven homecoming football game against Gettysburg.

• Last year 75 students from Central and Roncalli participated in Junior Achievement.  JA begins its 3rd year with the selection of participants from the schools next week.

• Wanda Wagemann and Darwin Wolf are Gypsy Day royalty candidates from Aberdeen.

• The United Methodist Church of Ashton has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The church building was erected in 1883 and remodeled in 1915.

• Sign up now for a booth at the Eureka Holiday Fair in late October.  The event will include a fashion show, book fair, commercial displays and booths by area organizations.

National Headlines:

• Attorneys for President Richard Nixon appeared before an apellate court in hopes of overturning  a lower court’s ruling that Nixon must turn over tape recordings of private conversations held in the Oval Office.

• The Jerry Lewis Telethon netted $12 million this year.

State Headlines:

• The state’s Democratic Party will host a telethon hoping to raise $20,000 and show people there is a better way to finance political campaigns than taking money from “fat cats” with special interests.

• The Skylab I crew of astronauts will present a lunar rock to USD next week.  Governor Richard Kneip will accept the moon rock on behalf of the citizens of SD.

Local/Area Headlines:

• Marvin and Mary Kalt will open “The Cupola”, an arts and crafts store, at 113 S Main in Aberdeen next week.

• Larry Desautels, sports editor of the Aberdeen American News for 38 years, was honored with a retirement party at Elks Club.

• The Aberdeen School Board and officials from Bethlehem Lutheran Church are discussing options to handle the student parking problem in the school/church neighborhood.

• Joe Bosmoe of Pierpont was elected president of the All-State Sing In executive committee.

• The Aberdeen postmaster says that nearly 85% of first class mail in and out of the Aberdeen post office includes the new 5 digit zip codes as part of the address.

• “Color My World” is the theme of the 1973 Pageant Day (Aberdeen Central’s homecoming) coronation, so far no theme has been chosen for the parade.

• Dr. Carson Murdy will teach another scuba diving class at the Aberdeen YMCA beginning next week.  During the past five years, 150 people have become certified divers after taking these classes locally.

• The goal of the 1973 United Way campaign is $120,000.  The campaign kicked off this morning with brakfast held at the YWCA.

• Jon Kohlhaas is the 1973 Prairiewood Golf Club champion.  He defeated Steven Bell in the annual tournament.

National Headlines:

• Citizens of Alaska will benefit in many ways from yesterday’s record $900 million sale of oil and natural gas leases in its frozen North Slope area.  The profits will be used for new schools, paved roads, and medical facilities.

State Headlines:

• The Black Hills State College student newspaper has won the highest possible rating from the National Newspaper Service that reviews college papers throughout the nation.

Local/Area Headlines:

• The Downtowner Friendship Inn (formerly the Alonzo Ward Hotel) has been sold to the Main Street Corporation headed by Fred Hatterscheidt.

• The city is considering the purchase of 50 acres of the King Ranch south of the city and east of the Moccasin Creek for the purpose of building a new sports complex.

• Sophomore men enrolled at Northern will be required to live in the dormitories this year just as freshman men and freshman and sophomore women are.  There are know adequate dorm rooms with the completion of Jerde Hall to allow this change.
