January 2, 1973

National Headlines:

  • American warplanes resumed their attacks on North Vietnam after a 36-hour halt for the New Year’s holiday.  Bombing in South Vietnam was also halted for 24 hours for the holiday but resumed today as well.

 State Headlines:

  • South Dakota Governor Richard Kneip was sworn in today for a 2nd term as the state’s highest elected official.  Kneip is the first democrat since the 1930s to win a 2nd gubernatorial term.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Julie Johnson has pledged to Alpha Lamda Delta, a women’s scholastic honor sorority, at USD.

  • Do your banking after hours by using “Tele-First” at the First National Bank.  Simply dial the number, state your transaction, and it will be transcribed by special recording equipment for processing with the next day’s business.  The ultimate convenience for today’s busy schedules.

  • The Farmers Union Co-Op in Warner reported a burglary with $250 of tools and batteries stolen.

  • The Central Eagles are preparing for a weekend basketball game with the Mitchell Kernels.  Bob Olson, Bob Stewart, and Keith Kusler are expected to be in the starting line-up.

  • Diana Ross is starring in “Lady Sings the Blues” at the Capitol.  George C. Scott stars in “The New Centurion” at the Orpheum.

January 3, 1966

National Headlines:

  • Paul Hornung and Jim Taylor led the Green Bay Packers to the NFL Championship by defeating the defending champs, the Cleveland Browns, 23-12.  Each Packer team member will receive a bonus of approximately $7,000 and each Brown player about $4,600.

State Headlines:

  • The SD attorney general’s office is sponsoring a school for detectives to learn more about fingerprinting, identification and photography.  Aberdeen Police Detective Sgt. Chester Rollins is one of 10 SD police officers attending the 5-day school in Pierre.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Northwestern Bell Telephone Co is introducing its new “push-button” telephone in the Aberdeen area.  The Touch-Tone phone features a soft musical tone for each number on the keypad.  It’s fast and it’s convenient. 

  • Songs in this week’s top 20 include:  “We Can Work it Out” by the Beatles at number 1; “Barbara Ann” by the Beach Boys at number 2; “Sounds of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel at number 4; and “As Tears Go By” by the Rolling Stones at number 7.

  • Area young women recently chosen to participate in upcoming Snow Queen Contest include.  Gwen Ryman was crowed Warner Snow Queen, Sharron Jeschke will represent Roscoe, Carol Lee Craig represents Groton, Sharon Melius represents Faulkton, and JoAnne Opsahl represents Ipswich.  The reigning Snow Queen is Marilyn Wik representing Cresbard

  • Tonight on TV:  Richard Chamberlain as “Dr. Kildaire’; Vince Edwards as ‘Ben Casey’; and everyone’s favorite housekeeper “Hazel” buys a used car and tried to fix it up herself.

 

January 4, 1977

National Headlines:

  • Jury selection continues for the manslaughter trial of singer Claudine Longet, ex-wife of singer Andy Williams.  Longet is accused of killing her lover, professional skier “Spider” Sabitch, in their Aspen, CO home.

State Headlines:

  • The Rapid City Journal has released its first high school basketball ratings for the new year.  In Class AA Aberdeen Central is ranked number one with a 6-0 season so far; in Class B, Webster is the top team with a 7-0 record to date.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Singing star “Oliver” will be the featured entertainment at the 1977 Snow Queen contest.  His hits include “Good Morning Starshine” and “Jean”

  • Dave Graf, executive director of the YMCA, spoke to the Kiwanis Sunrisers Club about the dangers of heart disease.

  • Orville Dinger was re-elected chairman of the Brown County Commission.

  • Local weather records for 1976 released today indicate Aberdeen received only 7.88” of moisture for the year--making it a record dry year.  Aberdeen’s normal moisture level is 19.10” annually.

  • Local after-holiday sales include: women’s polyester pantsuits for only $8.00 at Jupiter; a 30-day supply of Ayds “Reducing Candy” for $3.00 and a “One-Step at a Time” stop smoking kit from Water Pik for $8.00 at Ocso; 300 reusable bobbie pins for $.42 at Kmart; the new “2000 hour” light bulbs 6/$1.00 at Bittner Pharmacy located in the Ward Hotel.
