January 28, 1979

National Headlines:

  • Funeral arrangements are pending for former US vice president Nelson Rockefeller.  He served from 1974 – 1977 under president Gerald Ford.
  • Robert Redford declined the starring role in “Superman” because he just couldn’t see himself in a cape.

State Headlines:

  • State lawmakers will vote on a bill to increase the state gasoline tax by 2 cents per gallon.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • The Aberdeen Central Eagles defeated the Roncalli Cavaliers 65-42 in their annual cross-town match up.  Eagles top scorers were Roger Remein with 23 and Bill Gayton with 16. Steve Bormes had 12 and Rob Zephier added 10 for Roncalli.
  • Other basketball action:
  • Pollock over Cresbard 82 - 74.  High scorers:  Pollock: Allen Ryckman 19, Cresbard: Jeff Swanhorst 29 
  • Eureka over Northwestern 59 - 53.  High Scorers:  Eureka: Troy Orth 16, Northwestern: Alan Haselhorst 22
  • Hoven over Hosmer 77 - 55   High Scorers:  Hoven: John Heier 22, Hosmer: Tim Geist & Nick Karst 12 each

  • Sheila Solaas and Teresa Taylor led Groton to the team championship at the Watertown Invitational Gymnastic meet.  Edie Iwerks from Central placed in the uneven parallel bars.

  • Soloists for the upcoming Roncalli Stage Band concert are:  Marty Meyer on tenor sax; Gary Evelo on drums; and Tom Schares on trumpet.
  • Newly elected officers of the Aberdeen Downtown Association are:  Peter Kirkpatrick president, Earl Lammle vice president, and Marc Feinstein secretary/treasurer.
  • Long Lake residents are busy planning for the town’s 50th birthday that will be celebrated June 15-17.  Columbia will celebrate its Centennial the same weekend.
  • Jim Schriver has just graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and will be returning to Aberdeen to join the family business, Krueger-Schriver Mortuary.
  • Specials at Ken’s Fairway this week:  15oz bag Oreos for $.89; 3 lb can of ButterNut Coffee for $6.59; 8oz Kraft Creme Cheese $.58; and Campbell’s Tomato Soup $.19 per can

January 29, 1965

National Headlines:

  • Former President Eisenhower traveled to London to attend the funeral of his wartime comrade in arms, Winston Churchill.
  • A Minuteman 2 missile was successfully launched from its underground silo near Cape Canaveral and headed toward its target 4000 miles away.

State Headlines:

  • The first bill to be sent to the Governor from this year’s legislature approved the use of tungsten steel studs in motor vehicle tires.  Proponents of the bill claim these studded tires would cut in half the distance necessary for a car or truck to stop on an icy road.
  • Local/Area Headlines
    The Aberdeen National Bank will move from its Main Street location to its new building on the corner of S. 1st Street and 4th Avenue this weekend.  The bank will be open for business in the new location on Monday morning.
  • Rhoda Berkley and Paul Maloney are chairmen of the reunion of the Aberdeen Central’s Class of 1955 being planned for this summer.
  • Stop at Terry’s, Aberdeen’s newest and finest drive-in, at the corner of S Main and 12th Avenue.  Hours are 11am – 11pm seven days a week.
  • Work will begin this summer to transform US highway 12 from Aberdeen to Bath into a 4-lane highway.
  • Herried defeated Leola 55-40 despite Ron Kaaz’s 25 points for Leola.
  • Specials at the Rhine Room in the Super City Mall include Prime Rib $1.75 or Virginia Baked Ham for $1.35.
  • Tony Curtis, Debbie Reynolds and Pat Boone star in “Goodbye Charlie” now showing at the Capitol Theater.
  • Tonight on TV:  “Rawhide”, “Gomer Pyle, USMC” and “The Jack Paar Show”

 

January 30, 1985

National Headlines:

  • The stock market closed at an all time high of 1292 last night, breaking the previous high set on November 29, 1983.  OPEC announced a small drop in the price of oil to $27.96 a barrel.

State Headlines:

  • State Senator, Dave Lausten, from Aberdeen has created what he calls the “Golden Turkey Award” to honor the “Dumbest” bill introduced in this legislative session.  He is accepting nominations for this award and will announce the “winner” later this week.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • Forty-one people from Brown, Day, Edmunds and Walworth counties participated in the 1985 “Plunge to Pierre” sponsored by the Brown County Extension Homemakers.  The group observed the legislature in action and hosted their legislators at a luncheon featuring Miller’s Scott Heidepriem as the speaker.
  • Leon “Two Toot” Tobin announced his plans to retire from refereeing at the close of the current basketball season after 30 years.  Tobin estimates he has officiated about 1,500 games during that time.  The “Two Toot” nickname was started by fans—it was the rule that officials carry two whistles; Tobin hung both around his neck rather than tucking one out of sight in his pocket as the other officials did.
  • Local residents are being asked to collect box tops from Kellogg’s cereal.  The Kellogg Company will make a donation to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island Preservation Fund for every box top it receives from customers.  The First Baptist School will be the collection point for the Aberdeen area effort.
  • Jean Hurlbert, Char Tobin, and Kathy Barnett will chair the 1985 Roncalli Salad Luncheon.
  • Lee Goetz scored 25 points in Cresbard’s win over the Aberdeen Central JVs 69-50.
  • The Aberdeen “Y” and KSDN are sponsoring a four-hour “Dance for Heart” event to raise funds for the American Heart Ass’n. 
  • Members of the Aberdeen Chamber Ag Committee including Paul McDonald and Roy Becker, served coffee at the Aberdeen Livestock Company cattle sale today.
  • Tonight on TV:  “Highway to Heaven”, “The Fall Guy” and “Hotel”

 

January 31, 1959

National Headlines:

  • World Heavyweight Champion Floyd Patterson and challenger Ingemar Johansson of Sweden, Europe’s unbeaten champion, have agreed to a title fight next June.  Possible locations for the fight include: New York, Los Angeles, Indianapolis, and Colorado Springs.
  • The Green Bay Packers have hired Vince Lombardi as their new head coach.  Lombardi comes to them from the New York Giants where he served as defensive strategist.

State Headlines:

  • A measure to place a skull and crossbones symbol and a warning stating, “the state does not recommend use of this product” on all packs of cigarettes sold in SD did not pass the legislature.

Local/Area Headlines:

  • The congregation of Aberdeen’s St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will see architectural plans for a new sanctuary tonight.  The group has yet to determine a timetable to complete this project.
  • Marilyn Neff of Claremont High School has been selected as the school’s “Homemaker of Tomorrow” She will now enter the state contest.
  • Presentation Junior College will host “College Day” next week.  Senior girls from area high schools are invited to attend.
  • There are 17 acts in this year’s “Eaglean Follies” student talent show at Aberdeen Central, which will be presented, in the Civic Theater tonight for adults and tomorrow night for students.
  • Aberdeen Pheasant baseball player, Tito Francona, had 15 rebounds for the Schmidt Insulators in last weekend’s city basketball league tournament.  Francona’s team lost to the Dornbush Agency team 75 – 65.
  • In women’s city basketball, the Bucketeers, defeated the Presentation Nurses 50-23.  Colleen Williams had 40 points for the Bucketeers and the high scoring Nurse was Dorothy Gebhart with 16.
  • Listen to the “Hi-Fi Club” tonight on KSDN to hear selections from the album of the week, “Guitars Of Fire” by Johnny Mathes.
